Project Objectives, Summary Description and Anticipated
Results:
The objective of this project is to improve the ability to demonstrate
project results in the Telematics Application Programme, and to support
Technical Reviews, Dissemination and Concertation activities,
particularly for Telematics for Research.
By installing the applications developed or used in the Telematics
projects, EuroDemo aims at providing a demonstration facility located on
the campus of the Universities of Brussels (ULB-VUB) - within walking
distance of the Commission buildings in Avenue de Beaulieu. EuroDemo
will be built on the comprehensive networking infrastructure provided by
ULB-VUB; it will make use of the quality of the connectivity (2 Mbps
and 128 Kbps separate Internet accesses, 34 Mbps public ATM, ISDN,
X.25, local Ethernet and FDDI) as well as of the group's high level of
expertise in telematics applications and services (messaging,
directories, information servers, multimedia conferencing, simulation,
routing, bridging, protocol conversion, performance measurements, etc.).
It will therefore offer an adequate platform to demonstrate most kinds
of projects carried out in the Telematics for Research programme, or
within the Telematics Application programme at-large.
A complete room will be available with multimedia workstations and
PCs, as well as open connectivity for installing specific project
equipment; meeting facilities will include video capture and projection
facilities and a seminar area. Demonstration room scheduling and booking
will be handled through an on-line reservation system. All
demonstrations will be installed and coordinated by EuroDemo's
permanently allocated staff. Performance and evaluation tools will
constantly be available and logs will be kept for later reference and
reporting. Demonstration results will be recorded, compiled and made
available to the relevant parties (e.g. demonstrators, Commission).
EuroDemo will be particularly useful to conduct project reviews, high
level presentations as well as dissemination activities. The room will
be available at any time and the facility will be permanently supported
by members of the team of skilled researchers and experts (about 15
full-time) working on the various ULB-VUB projects.

Other Characteristics of the Project:
Users involved
EuroDemo will be built to best fit the needs for demonstrations of the
various projects in the Telematics Application Programme; a user survey
will be conducted at the start of the project to make sure all
requirements are properly covered. |
Technologies and/or approach used
The EuroDemo infrastructure will include essentially all state-of-the
art network technologies used in Telematics for Research (ATM, Internet,
ISDN, X.25, etc.); computing and network platforms will be open and
available. |
Expected benefits for the citizens
EuroDemo will allow to demonstrate all of the advanced projects carried
out in the Telematics Application Programme; this will have the effect
of making these results more tangible and understandable to a wider
audience, by being able to present them in an open and properly equipped
facility. |
Expected benefits for the users of the application
The different consortia carrying out Telematics Application Programme
projects in various parts of Europe will enjoy a well situated,
well-equipped demonstration facility, where their work can be presented
to selected audiences in optimum conditions. |
Expected benefits for the European Industries
EuroDemo will offer an open platform where new hardware, software,
applications and services can easily be implemented and demonstrated;
industrial partners involved in Telematics projects will enjoy having
this facility available to present and advertise their products and
services. |
Contribution to EU-policies
It is only too often that good results and progresses are not well
advertised and therefore not recognised or spread as they should;
European policies in terms of telematic applications and services will
benefit from being properly demonstrated to wider audiences. |
